What is Ear Wax

Earwax, also known as cerumen, is a brown, gray, or yellowish waxy substance. It protects the skin of the ear canal, assists in cleaning and lubrication, and also provides some protection against bacteria, fungi, insects, and water. Wax usually passes out of the ears harmlessly, but sometimes too much can build up and block the ears.

Symptoms of an earwax build-up

A build-up of earwax in your ear can cause:

  • Earache
  • Hearing loss
  • Tinnitus (hearing sound from inside your ear)
  • Itchiness (in or around the ear)
  • Ear Infections
  • Vertigo (A spinning sensation)

These problems will usually improve once the excess earwax has been removed.

Don’t try to remove a build-up of earwax yourself with your fingers, a cotton bud or any other object. This can damage your ear and push the wax further down.

What is Microsuction?

Microsuction is a method of removing ear wax/debris using microscopic vision and a gentle suction device. Unlike syringing/irrigation, the clinician can see the ear canal to safely extract the earwax. Microsuction is known to be the safest method for wax removal and in some cases it is the only method that should be used.

It is appropriate for:

  • Impacted wax
  • Perforated ear drum
  • Previous surgery/ unstable for syringing
  • Hearing aid user
  • Urgent removal due to poor hearing
  • Urgent removal due to flying or diving
  • Meniere disease
  • Vertigo

In most cases treatment is completed in one 20 minute session.

Do I need to use wax softening drops?

In most cases microsuction does not require lengthy use of ear wax softener, although we do advise to use olive oil Earol drops 24 hours prior your appointment.

Softening drops are available in most large super store and pharmacies. If you are unsure how to insert ear drops please read our guide below. Alternatively please contact us or your local pharmacist if you wish to discuss using drops or have any other concerns.

Step 1

Lay down on your side with the ear requiring drops facing upwards. Gently squeeze 2 to 3 drops at room temperature into the ear.

Step 2

Stay lying down for 5 minutes and then wipe surplus oil with a tissue.

Step 3

Repeat once or twice daily, if necessary.
